Maradona cites Best as an influence, Pele reckons he was the best player in Europe, certainly better than Gazza and Giggs not quite as good as Zidane, who for me is the best player I have ever seen

Re: George Best All by Himself
Only saw him live once, New Years Day 1972.

He was fairly anonymous, and we won 3-0. Bizarre penalty when a ManU player (forget who) had a brainstorm and thought he was playing basketball - he had no need to handle and no West Ham player near him, iirc.

Miike - Yes, he could finish too.

I don't have any real thoughts on Best as in how great he was as he was before my time and I've only seen vids, tv clips of him like most, plus it was a different era.

Clearly a genius, but was he better than Gascoigne and Giggs? Probably. Was he better than say Maradona and Zidane? No.

Bumped into him on a flight to Amsterdam . Seemed very withdrawn ( probably pissed )

Ag cholo

And thus on a par with Sandy Clark?

Re: George Best All by Himself
biggest compliment I could pay Best is he was like Alan Devonshire but with goals added. at their best both were unplayable but George had that dual threat where he regularly hit the back of the net

Undoubtedly one of the greats, probably only bettered by Dave Swindlehurst.

What like that Bobby Moore fellow?
You have to remember that defenders could maim people and they often played on mudheaps.
Always said about Alan Devonshire ... can you imagine a player like that on billiard table pitches with no tackling allowed as is the case today.

Massively overrated?

Behave, you cunt

Re: George Best All by Himself
In the early 90s I was living off the King's Road and I ran into him as he used to drink on The Phene. Total drunk dickhead.

Too young to have seen him so I've relied on seeing video clips. Always thought he was massively overrated. Never really proved himself at the highest level. And lets face it defenders were shite then.

I tend to agree with the room service fella. He threw away his one in a billion talent.

Watching it reminded me of my old man, not for the football but for the drinking. Even though he knew it would kill him eventually, he just could't say no to a beer, all very sad.

Re: George Best All by Himself
A few greats played some guest games when they came through Perth on a paid holiday after they'd retired .... Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore, Sir Trev, Mick Channon, Alan Ball ... but Best played for about a dozen teams.
Probably anyone who'd pay his bar bill.

Even Socrates played for Garforth Town

Sven Roeder 9:32 Mon Jul 3
Re: George Best All by Himself
He started at 17 and people forget he did actually play for a decade for Man U.
The saddest thing is that when he should have been at his peak at 27 he was out of the game at the top level and playing for a load of old dross in America, Scotland & all parts.
Had a little spell with Fulham with Rodney Marsh but suspect that was more to do with it being close to his favourite pubs.
He ended up playing a load of guest appearances for some extraordinarily shit teams.
I saw he played a game for Osborne Park Galeb. I grew up in the next suburb in Perth and that's the equivalent of a Sunday league team that would play in front of 50 pissed Yugoslavs.

Greatest player I have ever seen with my own eyes and not on a T.V he literally floated on mudheap of pitches.

Best player I ever had the pleasure to watch.

On shit pitches he was still a genius.

"he'd be in all time top ten"

Actually he would be in my top 1, Best player in my lifetime and had he been born in Argentina or Brazil or West Germany or Italy et al this viewpoint would probably be more widespread as he never made it on to the stage of what was then by far the most important event in world football.
